What Kind of Fruit Are You?

fruit_toon_group_tropical

At this harvest season it seems fitting to think about the fruit of our lives.  We long to have a life that is truly productive.  We seek to develop the gifts and talents God has given us as well as help others to be all they can be.  However, as believers in Jesus we discover we need to first meet two very important criteria, knowing the will of God and then carrying it out through acts of obedience.

The word explains to us how essential knowing God’s plan really is.  The Apostle Paul declares they “…do no cease to pray for you, and to desire that you might be filled with the knowledge of his will…” Col 1:9 NKJ   This knowledge is right within our grasp.  “If any of you really determines to do God’s will, then you will certainly know whether my teaching is from God or is merely my own.”  John 7:17 LB   As we pray for God to reveal his will we can be sure he will make it known at the right time.  Don’t be discouraged, hang on, his perfect timing is different than ours.

One of the blessed assurance’s that we will receive eternal life is part and parcel to doing God’s will.  “Not every one who says unto me ‘Lord, Lord’ shall enter into the kingdom of heaven but he that does the will of my Father which is in heaven.”  Matt 7:21 NKJ   We must decide whether we will embrace God’s plans for our life.  It is not enough to only know God’s will, we are also asked to obey.  Obedience simply means to respect, agree to follow or fulfill our part.  We are encouraged to “…try to find out and do whatever the Lord wants you to.”  Eph 5:17 LB   Obeying authority has always been a vital component of life.  Without a healthy submission to proper authority we cannot experience God’s fulfillment and success in business, family or our personal lives.  “From obedience and submission spring all other virtues…”  Michel de Montaigne

The Bible teaches us that the way to identify people is by the kind of fruit they produce.  “Not all who sound religious are really godly people.  For the decisive question is whether they obey my Father in heaven.”  Matt 7:21 LB   Do we have the transformed character that gladly obeys our Lord and submits to his will, producing abiding fruit?  In time we can learn to wait upon God for direction, most often found through the guidance of His word and prayer.  But there are also times of godly inspiration, spontaneous moments of wonder.  As we live out our faith we will delight in these special experiences of motivation that are revealing God’s plan.  For the believer there is only one perfect peace, walking in the will of God.  “God has linked these two things together, and no man can separate them- obedience and peace.”  Frederick Robertson

Yes, we want to be fruit bearers!  What a joy to know the way to please God and stand tall.  Together let’s make our lives an abundant harvest as we discern the will of God and willingly embrace the good plans of a loving Father.  Happy Harvest!  Vivian
